Who is the Voice of Amazon’s Verification Service?

I don’t know the name of the person who keeps calling me.

Under other circumstances, I would find this situation slightly alarming.  But, there is something about the voice – it is calming; assertive; reassuring – which gives me no cause for alarm.

It is a male voice.  How old?  I would guess late-twenties.  A slight mid-Atlantic twang, but nothing too aggressive.

His message is always the same or, at least, a variation on the same theme.  He begins with a polite “Hello,” and then he is sufficiently modest to introduce himself, although, by now, I recognise who he is:

“This is Amazon’s verification service.”

He then reads out an authorisation code – six digits; always different.  He reads them out slowly, annunciating each number clearly.  I sometimes play a game, attempting to predict which number he will say next, but 9 times out of 10 I am wrong.

Once he has finished reciting the sequence of numbers there comes my favourite part of the conversation:

“Again.”

It is a very manful “Again”, tolerating no protest.

By the second reading of the sequence of numbers, truth to tell, I am sometimes becoming a bit bored, but I never once think of hanging up on him.

And then, before I know it, the call is over.  The last number has been spoken and with a slightly abrupt – IMHO – “Goodbye”, he is gone.

But I know that he will call back again.

Call back again.

Soon.
