Political Party Leaders and Their Football Teams

One subject where both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer cannot be accused of not being transparent is in their support of a football team.  Sunak is a vocal supporter of Southampton; Starmer equally so of Arsenal.

But what of some of the other Party leaders?  Who do they support?  Here, I find their allegiances are not so apparent.

After a bit of Googling, I discovered that Nigel Farage had once revealed, in an interview with Matt Le Tissier, that he supported Crystal Palace, although I found myself wondering just how long it has been since he was last seen gracing the terraces of Selhurt Park.

As for the other leaders, I could find no information, and so in the interests of democracy, I decided to write to them to find out.

And, with admirable speed, both Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru and John Swinney of the SNP replied.  Unsurprisingly, both were partisan towards teams from their own nations: Rhun proving to be a Cardiff City supporter; and John a long-term fan of St Johnstone.  Hardcore; respect.

However, at the time of the Election, I have yet to hear back from either the Liberals or the Greens.  A tweet in support of Liverpool and a local newspaper article about a visit to Notts County, suggest that Ed Davey might support one or other of these two teams, but no one likes a flip-flopper in football; it is about as popular as a half-and-half scarf.

And as for Carla Denyer?  Well, perhaps she is simply not a football fan.  Some people aren’t, so I am led to believe.
