The Mild That Is Not So Mild

Always enjoyed a pint of Mild.  Back in the day, I might often be heard ordering a pint of Ansell’s Mild.  It was like having an Ovaltine at the end of an evening.  Sweet, malty, creamy, dark.  The perfect goodnight drink.  Something else that I remember about Mild was that it was … well… mild.  Typically, not much more than 3% ABV.

That was one of the reasons why I was amused to try a pint of Redemption Brewing Co. and The Kernel Brewery’s collaboration Victorian Mild.  It was listed as 6% ABV.  If this is their Mild, I can only wonder how potent is their Ordinary?  Perhaps each of the two breweries added in their 3% and it combined to give a total of 6%?  Or is that not how calculating ABV works?

However, in all other respects, this was a classic Mild.  A nice, treacly flavour; healthy, dark colour; very easily quaffable.

Have the times changed?  Or is it me who has changed?  The older one gets the lesser the ability to deal with alcohol.  So they say.  The famously anonymous ‘they’.

If this is the case, surely I should be trying to hunt out a Mild of 1.5% ABV?
